Keller and Andreas Oschlies : "Riverine nitrogen supply to the global ocean and its limited impact on global marine primary production: a feedback study using an Earth System Model" Submitted at Biogeosciences Corresponding author: Miriam Tivig (mtivig@geomar) April 20, 2021 ---------------------------- This folder contains a folder with the updates for the model code of the University of Victoria Earth System Climate Model UVic Version 2.9 (Keller et al., 2012; Eby et al., 2009; Weaver et al.,2001) including a module for river nutrient export, the compiled code for 7 simulations and the corresponding output, used for the study of riverine nitrogen export to the coastal ocean. Update_MTivig2020 ----------------- This folder contains the updated code for the simulations. The main changes to the code of Keller et al. (2012) have been made in: - /common/gosbc.F: Line 364 NO3 is added to the vertical fluxes (ino3flx) - /common/setdata.f: L. 142, the input file with nutrients from NEWS is read by the model. Depending on the simulation, a different data-file was used: L_NEWS_seas.nc (global NEWS simulation), L_NEWS_seas_AFRIC.nc, L_NEWS_seas_ASIA.nc, L_NEWS_seas_EU.nc, L_NEWS_seas_NAM.nc, L_NEWS_seas_SAM.nc. - /mom/tracer.F : in the npzd model, benthic denitrification and subgrid bathymetry are defined - /embm/rivmodel.F : the rivermodel has been changed to read in NEWS nutrients without seasonality Code_NEWS ----------------- The code-folder contains the compiled code of the simulation with UVic including NEWS river export of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) from all river discharge points. Code_CTR ----------------- Compiled code of the control simulation, same configuration as NEWS, but without river DIN discharge. Code_run_AFRICA ----------------- Compiled code of the simulation including nitrogen exported only by rivers in Africa. Code_run_ASIA ----------------- Compiled code of the simulation including nitrogen exported only by rivers in Asia. Code_run_EU ----------------- Compiled code of the simulation including nitrogen exported only by rivers in Europa and Russia. Code_run_NAM ----------------- Compiled code of the simulation including nitrogen exported only by rivers in North America. Code_run_SAM ----------------- Compiled code of the simulation including nitrogen exported only by rivers in South America. data.100.100.19 ---------------- Contains the input data files, including the riverine nutrient export files for the simulations NEWS (L_NEWS_seas.nc), NEWS AFRICA (L_NEWS_seas_AFRIC.nc), NEWS_ASIA (L_NEWS_seas_ASI.nc), NEWS Europe and Russia (L_NEWS_seas_EU.nc), NEWS North America (L_NEWS_NoAm.nc) and NEWS Sout America (L_NEWS_seas_SoAm.nc). Includes also the restart.nc used for the simulations. Note that the data that has been used for these input files provides from the Global NEWS2 model, which was developped by the Global NEWS group and is available at the web site: http://www.ioc-unesco.org/icr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=45&Itemid=100002 . Please email Emilio Mayorga at mayorga@marine.rutgers.edu to obtain this dataset. We are very thankful to the Global NEWS group of making the use of this dataset possible. Files for compilation ----------------- Control.in, mk.in, mk_regional.in OUTPUT ----------------- Model-output of the 7 simulations (NEWS, CTR and the 5 regional experiments) performed with the model configuration described before, used for the Figures and results in the manuscript. Each variables is shown as 100 years average for each grid point. - O_deni: water column denitrification (mol N m-3 s-1) - O_bdeni: benthic denitrification (mol N m-3 s-1) - O_diaznpp: net primary production from diazotrophs (mol N m-3 s-1) - O_n2fix : nitrogen fixation (mol N m-3 s-1) - O_no3 : ocean nitrate concentration (mol m-3) - O_po4 : ocean phosphate concentration (mol m-3) - O_phytnpp: marine net primary production rate (mol N m-3 s-1) - UVIC29-NEWS-[SIMULATION]_100y_10000y_tavg_6var.nc : global ocean data of the simulation averaged over 100 years for O_no3, O_denitr, O_bdeni, O_no3fix, O_phytnpp, O_diaznpp The Ocean basin data are zonal means of the variables for the three main ocean basins, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. The ocean basins have been selected with climate data operators (cdo; Schulzweida, 2019). - ATL: 80°W-20°E 80°S-80°N - IND: 30°E-120°E 50°S-25°N - PAC: South-Pac. 130°E-74°W 60°S-0 North-Pac. 115°E-96°W 0-60°N RELEVANT PUBLICATIONS --------------------- Bohlen, L., Dale, A.
